This butterfly was in the top of a tree. Fortunately for me the tree was on the side of a hill so I could climb up the hill and shoot across the top of the tree. All that was left was a whole bunch of waiting until one of these butterflies chose to visit the tree i was watching. When we first approached the island I saw some of these butterflies zipping around and I thought they were hummingbirds until I got closer. They are bigger than monarch butterflies. This was shot with a 400 mm zoom lens on a Nikon D50 the shot was handheld.

This past September I was in the Philippines again visiting 100 Islands National Park. While wandering around on one of the islands I noticed this little fellow crawling around the rocks. I thought It would be nice to share the photo with the world. Not everyone will visit the Philippines during their lives so I will help others see some of the wonders of that part of the world.

New Studio Nearly Ready

I have nearly completed the move from the back of the house to the front. New tile had to be laid and some other modifications to make the room ready for carving as well as visitors to the studio. I am very much looking forward to completion so I can again satisfy my creative needs.

The City Council of Vermillion South Dakota mailed an official Proclamation of Appreciation thanking me for the carved ostrich egg shell I gave to the city to commemorate their sesquicentennial celebration. What a great thing they did. I will proudly display this document. Thank you Mayor Christopherson and the City of Vermillion.

New Eggs Carved While Daughter was Visiting

While my younger daughter was visiting this past week she chose to try her hand at carving an emu egg shell. This is her first effort. Also of note, I showed her which burs to use and she went from there on her own. She used a broken egg to practice on before attempting this project. The design is her own, The goose egg is also her work.

Carved Egg Noteworthy in Yankton SD Paper

Goose egg carved in Relief

Here is my first attempt at carving a relief image on a goose egg shell. Obviously the images done in this fashion will be a very shallow relief. This is an African Violet plant very much stylized to take advantage of my love for piercing the shell.

In no particular order, because no single portion is more important than another, I will describe why each image was chosen. To begin this description I will explain why the lattice is used to connect the circled images and also why the acanthus leaves grace the bottom of the design.

The emu egg I carved last year which went to the Forbes Art Gallery in New York City was a lattice and acanthus design done in the style of Faberge eggs. This was the first piece I carved which was chosen for public display. I integrated that same idea as my personal contribution to the overall design.

This first image is to commemorate the first residents of this region. A stylized Native American motif using the state animal which is the coyote. I feel all peoples had influence on what Vermillion is today and I want to acknowledge the diversity of our country to which South Dakota owes allegiance.

Second is a representation of the university which functions in Vermillion. This is the only university in South Dakota to offer a degree in Fine Art. Also, the offer degrees in medicine and law which no other South Dakota school offers. My affinity is of course to the arts.

This building is the first city hall. I wanted to record history in this work as it is important to the festivities this gift is meant to celebrate. During this 150th year of the city a new city hall was dedicated. Since the people have this new building in their lives every day I chose to put the historical city hall in the design to bring both the old and the new together.

This last image is of the state flower which is the Pasque. This is here simply because I wanted another image to represent the state that wasn't Mount Rushmore. That image has been done to death. I also like the way flowers look when carved in relief on the ostrich egg shells.

The remaining views I will describe as I post them. The people of Vermillion have been wonderful and very welcoming. I am thrilled to have been part of the festivities.

One Last Shot from Previous Philippines Trip

This as a small specimen of this spider. The tree in which it lived was filled with spiders like this one. This shot was taken in the lowest branches of the tree about 6 feet above the ground. In the canopy of the tree large members of this species could be seen in their webs while I was standing on the ground. I estimate the tree was 50+ feet tall. I asked some locals about this kind of spider and I was told the can eat birds. I certainly would not climb this kind of tree because each one of these trees contains hundreds of these spiders. This one spanned close to 3 inches from leg tip to leg tip.

While vacationing in the Philippines I came across this butterfly. It had just emerged from its chrysalis which it was still hanging onto while its wings were drying. Less than 10 minutes lter it was gone to lead its new life. Very Cool!

Central Park in November

I was looking through some photos I had but on bulk storage and found this one again. I was in New York City in November of 2008. I was thinking then "How can anyone go to New York City and not go to Central Park?" There I discovered this pond where people sail remote control boats. With the fall colors and 5th Avenue in the background I could not keep from clicking off a few shots. I thought I would share this one with the world. While there I had to eat a dirty water dog as well. How could I not?

A Child's Simple Fascination With Life

My grandson discovered the small crabs that live under the rocks in Puget Sound, Washington. Watching him as he interacted with the small life forms of the beach was a highlight I not soon forget. after I put the first crab in his hand he must have picked up and checked out 20 to 30 more of them. I was amazed at how careful he was to keep from hurting them. He did want to take some but home but his mother had to explain why that wasn't a good idea and what would happen to the crabs if he tried. after that he was perfectly content to just play with them on the beach.

The top photo shows both girls and their new necklaces. The foundation of each necklace is a button quail eggshell. They created the egg art themselves using a kit we purchased at the International Egg Art Guild gathering held in Washington. The second photo is my younger daughter and the last photo is the older daughter. They are carving the parakeet egg shells you see in the previous post.

These photos show some projects that were completed this past weekend by some very special students I have begun to teach. The reason I give them the "special" status is two-fold. The first reason being they show an innate ability to carve egg shells. They also have no fear in taking on projects that are far beyond a beginning level. The second reason they are special is that they are my daughters. I am elated that they have shown an interest in my art. Now I can pass my knowledge to others and I can only hope they will take what I teach them and advance it to realms hereto unknown. Trip to Seattle Washington

I Arrived Yesterday (the 9th of July 2009) to check out the International Egg Art Guild Show eing held this weekend. I went for a walk down the coast in Puget Sound after getting settled in because the weather was so nice and I had the time. The park which I visited was about 5 minutes from where I was staying with my daughter, Jennifer. Here are a couple of photos I was lucky enough to shoot of a Blue Heron that flew by low over the water. It paused for just a moment on top of a piling which explains the odd shots of the bird.

Work continues on this project. Because of my family ties to this city I want to do all I can to present a piece the city will be proud to show. Carved Egg Shell Show at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center Ends Today

Due to the popularity of this exhibit at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center this show was extended for a second month. What an awesome show it was. I am very pleased to have brought such exposure to the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. I heard from many visitors that they had no knowledge of the Center until this show was put in place. We tied the final days of the exhibit to the Fiesta multi-cultural event which was held on the 39th of May. The main reason we tied the two together is the carved ostrich egg which West Valley City commissioned to help commemorate the shared event between our city and Boca del Rio, Vera Cruz, Mexico. Boca del Rio is our sister city. Here are some photos of the egg I carved for the event.

The past few months have been filled with great experiences and awards. On Saturday the 30th of May I was in attendance at the Best of State Gala where I sat amongst truly great individuals and companies. It was my great privilege to be a medal winner for my contributions to art and our state.

New Carved Emu Egg Shell For Face of Utah sculpture Exhibit

Here is a glimpse at the new emu egg shell I carved for the Face of Utah Sculpture exhibit that opens in June. If you want to see the entire design yo uwill have to attend the show. The exhibit will run from June 11 until August 4. best of all it will be free to attend. The exhibit is being held at The Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City, Utah. The normal hours are Monday through Thursday 9 am until 6 pm.

There will be many other artists displaying pieces in many different media. Bring the family for a great evening supporting the artists of our state!!

Fiesta 2009 in West Valley City to Have Carved Ostrich Egg Shell as Gift For Dignitaries

This is just a teaser of what will be presented on the 30th of May to the Mayor of Boca del Rio Vera Cruz, Mexico. Boca del Rio is the sister city to West Valley City. There will be a big celebration called Fiesta 2009 to mark the gather of the dignitaries of these two cities. I have been given the great privilege of creating the gift which will be given the Boca del Rio. After the event I will show photos of the remaining portions of the egg shell. It is an ostrich egg carved in relief. When I post all the remaining photos I will explain the significance of each image.

Utah Best of State Awards and Recognition

I was nominated some months ago for a very prestigious award and beyond belief I was actually named an medal winner in teh program. The award is more encompassing than just making art. It also includes contributions to the community and the state. The gala is May 30, 2009. I will wear a tuxedo for the first time in my life. I am more grateful than I can find words to express.

Acceptance to Show in Face of Utah Sculpture

GREAT NEWS!!!

I just received official notice that I have been accepted to submit art to be shown in the Face of Utah Sculpture V Exhibit. This is an exhibit which is specifically for Utah artists. In the past there has been a great range of things to see. Traditional bronze, glass, linen, and wood are a few of the many forms of expression that can be expected.

I am thrilled to have been selected. I have it in mind to create a new piece specifically for this show, time permitting. The show will be open to the public and best of all it will be free. The show will run from June 11, 2009 until August 4, 2009.

Carved Gourds Seen In the Public For The First Time

I decided that today would be a good time to show a couple of gourds I carved some time ago. They are currently being shown at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center as part of the egg show I am presenting. this will be their debut on the web. They are colored with Min Wax oil based stains. This is done so that each of these pieces will have a very long life. These stains hold their color well over time. Some of the single leaves have as many as 7 different colored stains to get the effects you see here.

Carved Ostrich Egg Gifted to West Valley City, Utah

This evening I gave a carved ostrich eggshell to West Valley City. I did this during the scheduled weekly city council meeting. Friends and family came to support me. Here is a description of the project and photos.

The various cameos on this carved ostrich egg represent many aspects of West Valley City.

1. The first image is the logo of the city created with reverse images.
2. Also included is an interpretation of the Days of 47 Rodeo. This image was included in the overall design to commemorate 2009 being the first year the rodeo will be held at the E-Center.
3. The third image is a stylized hockey goal tender to represent the Utah Grizzlies. Behind the goalie is a silhouette of our state in the place of the net a goalie would normally defend.
4. A significant historical artifact is represented at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. An Olmec head given to us by our sister city Boca del Rio in Vera Cruz, Mexico. I chose this as a fourth image due to its importance not just to West Valley City but also to Utah. I am told there are very few of these even in our nation making it even more noteworthy.
5. The last image is taking the position on top of the egg shell. A Sego lily, our state flower.

Each of these images is placed in one of five rings. The five rings were chosen to symbolize West Valley City being one of the special locations chosen to host an Olympic event in 2002. All these images and symbols are tied together with two simple forms, the lattice on top and the relief carved acanthus. These are significant to me as they make up the design of the first carving I did which received public acclaim, a carved emu egg shell which was set on display at the Forbes Art Gallery in New York City.

Basic Egg Carving Class at Treeline in Provo Utah

Today I taught my first class in basic egg shell carving. There were 8 students. Unfortunately one of the students left before I shot the photos. I wanted everyone to have an egg they completed for the photo but due to previous obligations the missing student needed to leave early. Here are the remaining seven students showing their creations. I had a lot of fun working with these folks. They certainly made the my newness to teaching easier. Thank you all for a great day!!

Channel 4 Good Things Utah Live Broadcast

Another wonderful opportunity happened today. I spent as few minutes on live television with the fun folks of Good Things Utah. I was as nervous as I could be and not have butterflies coming out of my ears. The ladies took good care of me though. They asked guestions fast enough that I had no time to think about where I was or what I was doing. The allotted time flew by and the next thing I know the segment was over. Thank you Channel 4 and Good Things Utah.

KSL Broadcasts Carved Eggshell Show at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center

Awesome news today!!! KSL (channel 5) did a GREAT clip showing me carving an eggshell. I made a special design just for this interview. After the reporter (Amanda Butterfield) left I completed the carving which I was doing for the interview. I then sent a photo of the finished egg to Amanda which she made part of the broadcast. Hi folks,

Some more fun things are coming for Easter. I guess creating art with eggs is a good thing at this time of year. I am so very excited for the recent opportunities. There are too many people to list individually. A few who stand out and deserve special thanks are Julie from the E-Center. Without her coaching much of this would not have occurred. T and Becci from Q4U have also been instrumental in my development. Tony and Maria, owners of The Olympian Grill, also deserve a heartfelt thank you. They did much over the past few years when life wasn't as good as it is now. Annette, you too are on the list of special souls who give far more than you ever get back. One day your time will come.

For artist, eggs are a singular delicacy

West Valley City » Egg carver Brian Baity knows the drill.
And that's why 40 of his hand-carved egg shells are on display during this Easter season.
Lew Jensen, an Orem dentist, used his knowledge of drills to invent a tool (sold through a company called Profitable Hobbies) that allows artists such as Baity to carve geometric patterns on such delicate objects as egg shells, glass, crystal, gourds and wood.
Besides, Baity had something to prove when he started carving eggs in 2005 after buying one of the drills.
"When we decorated Easter eggs, I always lost the contest," said Baity, who says the eggs sell anywhere from $75 to $5,000.
Judging from the intricate designs Baity creates on eggs that range in size from a tiny quail to a large ostrich, winning that contest should not be a problem.
Michael Christensen, folklorist for the Utah Cultural Celebration Center, was particularly impressed with the way Baity uses different egg layers to provide color for his works, which are never dyed.
"There is a rhea egg that he has carved that has four layers," said Christensen. "It looks like it is painted but it's not."
Baity, a Renaissance man who also enjoys working with bonsai and loves pre-1970s British sports cars, said his background in metrology, the science of weights and measures, helped him master the carving technique. Metrology involves electronic and physical calibration that must be scientific and precise. For example, one laser system he worked on can dissect a human hair into a thousand equal pieces.
"This leads into the precise geometric designs I like to do," he said.
Baity purchases eggs online that have already had the yolk and white removed. Smaller eggs are more expensive because they take more time and are more difficult to carve than the bigger ones, he said.
"The simple ones I can do in an hour or less," said the artist, who once spent 200 hours designing and carving a single egg. "The thicker the egg, the less apt the drill is to wander. Bigger is better in this case."
Christensen said the eggs are displayed inside some gourds that were also carved by Baity, some of which have Easter themes.
